Harvest Rescue & Grow a Row

The Nelson Food Cupboard is a barrier-free food bank. We strive to offer a wide variety of healthy food options to our customers. Our project for this year is to offer our customers as much locally-grown produce as possible. We run a couple of innovative programs that make it possible to provide local produce on a low budget. We will continue to encourage Nelson-area residents to “Grow a Row” for the Food Cupboard. Our most wanted vegetables include potatoes, carrots, green beans and squah. And our volunteers will continue to harvest unwanted fruit and garden produce through our “Harvest Resuce” project. Last year we recused and shared $15,000 worth of fresh produce! We believe healthy food is a human right. We look forward to working with the community to provide local produce options.

The Beyond Recycling Family Eco-Challenge

We will investigate our homes and how we use food, waste, transportation, water, and energy.

We are changing the way we use the 5 categories in our homes by changing our actions. For example,

turn off or unplug electronics in the home, close cutains at night to keep heat in, turn thermostat 1 degree to save 2% on your heating bill.

Our class is trying to make a difference with our families at home, by conserving energy and waste and living more sustainably.

Cleaner delivery vehicles

For my delivery service, Nelson’s Sameday Courier, I bought a Honda Civic Hybrid , an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle for small deliveries, and a Clean Diesel MB Sprinter van, a Low Emissions Vehicle that uses half the fuel of my old van and uses BIO-Diesel too.
I pledge to clean and green the side of the highways for Adopt-A-Hwy program near Baker and Hwy 3A in Nelson.
