Lakeside Park is where we start our Earth Day Events at 7.30am

Kids Activities - Downstairs

Christine Grossutti the climate action facilitator for the Youth Climate Leadership Alliance (Ministry of Environment) and her team leads a fun filled day for kids!


10am - Climate change video and trivia - win an earth day poster!


11am - Craft: egg cup grass heads - draw a funny face on an egg cup, plant some hair and take it home to watch it grow!


12 - 1pm - Get creative: colour, draw or design an Earth Day logo!


1pm - Recycled can herb pots - decorate a used can and plant your favorite herb inside.  Take it home and watch it grow all summer long!


2pm - Outdoor game


3pm - Climate change video and trivia round 2! - win a recycling poster!

An exciting schedule of events beginning at 7:30 am with the Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Band and an Earth Run (or walk) and ending at 11.00pm with the talented, fun-loving, foot-stomping band...the Tuques!

7.30 am Walk Run

Meet at Lakeside Park and be entertained by the Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Band prior to joining in on our Earth Run (walk if you like) along the shores of Kootenay Lake up to the Presbyterian Church (Community Center) on the corner of Kootenay and Victoria Streets.


8.30 - 10.00 am Pancake Breakfast

Pancake breakfast for all the family. Join in for some fresh home made pancakes with real local fruit sauce. Yummmy! (by donation).


9.00am Rotarians at Work

10.00am - Welcome by Rona Park 

Rona is the executive director of the Nelson CARES Society and passionate Earth Day supporter.


10.05am - 10.45am - Colleen Matte and John Alton 

When you hear about anything to do with earth care or innovative sustainability ideas you will always find Colleen or John somewhere in front or behind the scenes. They will speak on the many community initiatives of Earth Matters and the West Kootenay ECO Society plus the expansion of the Nelson Carshare Co-Op , Community Composting, Land Share initiatives and much more.


10.45am - 11.00am Anna Planedin  Anna is a researcher and communications coordinator for the Centre for Innovative and Entrepreneurial Leadership (CIEL) and the organizer for the 100 Mile Ideas Diet conversation cafés. She is a passionate community organizer and networker who will provide insights into communities and sustainable planning.


11.00am - 11.45pm Julie KerrCraig Korth and Bluegrass Friends
We have a special show for you featuring the sweet vocals and guitar picking of Julie Kerr and Canada's finest banjo picker and instrumentalist, Craig Korth......PLUS some special guest appearances by some of the talented musicians of Nelson's Bluegrass Community. Ya'll come on down for some hot banjo pickin, soulful singing and home-grown "mountain" music to kick off the musical events for the day.

On the street join in with the Moving Mosaic Samba Band and move to their lively brazillian rhythmns and beats. An awe inspiring and always entertaining band of musicians and dancers who'll have you dancing, clapping, laughing and smiling all at the same time!!! 

12.15pm - 12.40pm Jon Steinman
Jon is always entertaining and full of insight. He will update you on everything to do with Community Food Matters Initiative and other interesting topics. He is the anchor for the wildly successful Deconstructing Dinner Radio Show on Kootenay Co-Op Radio.

12.40pm - 1.30pm - Selkirk College Music Program Graduates
We have some highly talented musicians from the Selkirk College Music and Technology Program performing their original compositions for you. Dan Howlett is a folk singer with a deep rich voice who has sung his songs to appreciative audiences across Canada. More musician bio's to be added soon!

1.30 - 2.00pm - Betty Offin
Betty is the worm lady extrordinaire from Castlegar! She will give a lively talk about compost, community gardens and vermicomposting (worm composting).  She'll also have a table setup by the front of the building with info, tools and products.


2.00pm - 2.30pm Dominique Fraissard

Singer/Songwriter from Australia now living in Nelson and working with the Nelson CARES Society. He has numerous albums out already with a wide variety of highly entertaining and thoughtfully crafted songs about life and love.


2.00pm - 4.00pm - Cottonwood and Community Gardens Walk

Colleen Matte will be leading an informative walk to the Cottonwood Park and Community Gardens. You can help out with work in the garden as Colleen informs you of the ongoing projects to introduce more community gardening in Nelson.


2.30 - 3.00 Paula Kiss

World traveller, engineer and in-demand Environmental Consultant who setup and manages the popular Building Tree in Nelson will give an empassioned talk about environmentally sustainable, healthy buildings, exciting home renovation ideas and much more.


3.00pm - 3.30pm Mr Aardvark 'Unplugged'

The infamous Aardvark is a highly talented singer/songwriter, dobro player and guitarist, well known in the Kootenays who will entertain you with his powerful vocals, soulful songs and stories.


3.30pm - 4.00pm Shayla Wright

Shayla is an international coach, speaker and writer, who worked with Mother Teresa.  She will speak about caring for the earth as "Our Evolutionary Imperative." A special talk not to be missed!!


4.00pm - 5.00pm One World Choir

An amazing blend of vocal talents make up this innovative and entertaining choir. They will have you singing, clapping and dancing on your toes with their energy.

Night Time Celebrations

7.00 pm - 11.00pm

Be prepared for a whole lotta fun during our Earth Day Concert and Dance from 7 till 11pm. Come and join in on a special Concert and Dance with two of the Kootenay's best loved bands. Featuring The Toques and Brian Rosen and the Whatnow. They will have music for the whole family. Kids, bring your folks, grandparents and their friends. A fun night with a down-to-earth theme. Snacks and Drinks available.


Shoes are not allowed in the gymnasium where we have the dance so please be sure to bring some fancy dancin sox!!


We look forward to seeing you at the night time concert and dance. Laugh and dance the night away and let the good times roll....
